Kairos Torch has been developed by Kairos to facilitate ministry to youth 13 - 18 years of age who live in a juvenile detention center.
The Torch program starts with a cursillo-type 2-day weekend, put on by an ecumenical team with the Chaplaincy and which allows youth to experience God's love.
This retreat is followed up by a continuing ministry that includes weekly one-on-one mentoring of the youth by Kairos volunteers and monthly group reunions with the Kairos community. The most important element of Torch is the establishment of a mentoring relationship between each of the youth and a mature, Christian Kairos volunteer. The mentoring program goes on for a minimum of 6 months or until the youthful offender is released, whichever occurs first.
The Torch weekend, combined with mentoring, is designed to build the self-esteem of each participating youth and help them develop life skills that will help them be prepared for success on the outside
